Color-Dipped Bowls

One of my favorite holiday traditions is to sit by the fire and make orange pomander balls. Pomander balls go back to the 15th century, when they served as natural air fresheners for closets or drawers. We hang them for decoration-- on the outside of our front-hall closet, in the laundry room and the kitchen-- and, of course, for that beautiful citrus-spice smell that warms the room. We found the inspiration for our designs in some patterns from Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day. Find them at

  • Skewers
  • Whole cloves
  • Straight pin
  • Ribbon or string
  • Water-based marker



In addition to oranges and lemons, this project works well with limes or apples.
