Hanging Table

Turn a slab of natural wood into a conversation piece. Unlike any old, run-of-the-mill table, this one is suspended from the ceiling! Inspired by the 20th-century furniture designer George Nakashima, this unexpected surface is simple to assemble and fun to use.

Materials & Tools

  • Slab of natural wood (example is 3 inches thick x 2½ feet x 3 feet)
  • Drill with a ¾-inch bit
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • Linseed oil
  • Heavy hook mounted in your ceiling
  • ¾-inch thick nylon or cotton rope
  • Level

TIPS FOR INSPIRATION

Be sure to find a ceiling beam or stud to support the weight of the table. Wood slabs can be found at your local lumber store, salvage yard or online. To add a pop of color, use mountain climbing nylon rope, which comes in a variety of bright colors and interesting patterns.
